Freedom of the seas is essential to global stability and shared prosperity. Recent tensions affecting key maritime routes in the Middle East have highlighted their far-reaching geopolitical and economic consequences, including pressures on energy costs and global supply chains.
In Southeast Asia, developments in the South China Sea have likewise underscored the complexity of maritime disputes. While tensions persist, restraint, calibrated policies, dialogue, and diplomacy have helped manage differences and reduce the risk of escalation.
These situations are linked by the principle of freedom of the seas and by the central role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in supporting a rules-based maritime order.
The seminar will examine how respect for UNCLOS strengthens international law, promotes the peaceful settlement of disputes, and reinforces the global maritime regime.
It will also encourage broader discussion of ocean governance, sustainability, marine environmental protection, and maritime awareness.
